N. 584. p 16 xbr 1817 [3 GR Stempel] [initials] Durchlauchtigster Fürst! Gnädigst regierender Fürst und Herr! Dem Neubauer Voigt zu Nordholz ist dicht vor dem Dorf, im Forst ein Platz zum Hausbau nebst etwas Gartenland zugesichert worden, neben welchem noch Erdreich genug übrig bleibt, so daß auch ich daselbst anbauen kann. Die erforderlichen Einhundert Thaler kann ich nachweisen, indem dieselbigen von Seiten des Amts für mich belegt sind. Meinen Abschied aus hiesigen Kriegsdiensten habe ich zwar noch nicht, dieweil ich nicht darauf angetragen habe. Es kann aber meine Militärpflichtigkeit am Neubauen wohl nicht hinderlich seÿn. Ich führe wegen meiner Persönlichkeit noch an, daß ich mit dem Hauptmann Barkhausen nach Spanien marschiret und mit demselben gefangen genommen, wegen Unerträglichkeit der englischen Behandlung der Gefangenen, englische Dienste habe nehmen müssen. Da dem Voigt der zugesicherte Platz noch nicht ausgemessen ist, so würde, wenn ich auch mir der erwünschte Platz zugetheilt würde es ein Ausmessen seÿn, daher ich nur noch unterthänigst darauf antrage: Mir gnädigst fordersamst willfährige Resolution zu ertheilen. Historical note (military service): The petitioner’s statement that he marched “to Spain” and later entered “English military service” refers to the Napoleonic Wars (1808–1814), specifically the Peninsular War. At that time Schaumburg-Lippe belonged to the Confederation of the Rhine and supplied troops serving under French command in Napoleon’s campaign in Spain. German soldiers captured there by British forces were often given the choice of remaining prisoners or enlisting in British-organized units (such as German auxiliary formations associated with the King’s German Legion). The petitioner is therefore explaining that his service with the British resulted from captivity during the war, not voluntary disloyalty. |
N. 584 Presented 16 December 1817 [3 GR stamp] [initials] Most Serene Prince! Most gracious reigning Prince and Lord! A plot of land for building a house, together with a small garden, has been promised to the Neubauer (settler) Voigt of Nordholz, just outside the village in the forest; beside it enough ground still remains so that I also could build there. I can document the required one hundred thalers, since this is already recorded with the Office (local territorial administrative office of Bückeburg). I have not yet obtained my discharge from my present military service, because I have not applied for it. However, my military obligation cannot well be an obstacle to my building a house. Concerning my personal circumstances, I further state that I marched to Spain with Captain Barkhausen and was captured together with him and, because of the intolerable treatment of the prisoners by the English, was compelled to enter English service. Because Voigt’s plot has not yet been surveyed, if my requested plot were granted as well, both could be measured out at the same time. Therefore I now most humbly petition only this: That a gracious and prompt favorable decision be granted to me.
